A study on the frozen red blood cells for the blood supply in emergency state

Abstract
Frozen-deglycerolized red blood cells have many potential advantages over other red-cell products, including prolonged storage time, improved blood inventory control and maintenance of rare-donor blood.
Ten units of CPDA-1 packed red cell were used to evaluate the possible utility of frozen red cells I Armed Hospital. Frozen-deglycerolized red blood cells were prepared with high-glycerol technique and tested.
The mean recovery of red blood cells was 80.2% of original red cells. The removal rate of WBC and platelet was 99.7% and 94.5% respectively. To confirm whether the deglycerolization was statisfactory or not, many tests such as osmotic fragility
test,
osmolalit, test and specific gravity test were accomplished. The osmolality of thawed-deglycerolized red blood cells was 314-395 mosm/Kg H2O and specific gravity was 1.006-1.015. There was no sign of bacterial or fungal growth in this study.
There
no
major technical difficulties on the preparation and use of frozen-deglycerolized red cells in Armed Hospital. The main problems were the time for complete deglycerolization.
